What’s More Important: Cookies or Babies?

Posted on February 24, 2014 in Life by

Cookie-CotAs you might know by now, there is a boycott of Girl Scout cookies taking place across the country. The purpose is to expose the connection between the Girl Scouts and the abortion industry. Many still do not know that every box of cookies bought will send money to groups like Planned Parenthood and help fund abortion.

For years now the Girl Scouts (Part of the World association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts – WAGGGS) have been in bed with Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry. They even recently honored both Nancy Pelosi and Cecile Richards as “women of courage.” Nancy Pelosi is the minority leader of the House of Representatives, while Cecile Richards is the president of Planned Parenthood. Apparently supporting the whole sale murder of innocent children makes you a “woman of courage” to the Girl Scouts. Hmm…might have to check into other groups for my daughter.

Furthermore, as reported, “In March 2010 WAGGGS bragged that one of its delegates, Nefeli Themeli, was among a group of young people advocating for ‘[a]ccessible, affordable and safe abortions’ at the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.”

But while many have worked to expose this link, a link that is now so solid neither The Girl Scouts nor Planned Parenthood can ignore it, that won’t stop either from trying.

The article referenced above shows the lengths to which the Girl Scouts are trying to cover up the fact that they are partners with Planned Parenthood. The details show conclusively that the two organizations are indeed working together, but the Girls Scouts are trying to hide it. Wait a minute; I thought the Girls Scouts were all about being a proud woman, proud of who you are and what you believe. If that is true, why are they trying to hide their connection with Planned Parenthood? How do they portend to teach their girls to be proud of who they are and what they believe when they are working to hide their ties with Planned Parenthood?

For that matter, if abortion is really “no big deal” as Planned Parenthood asserts, and if the Girl Scouts truly believe every woman should have the right to abortion, why does the Girl Scouts care if people know the two groups are connected and working together? Could it be due to the fact that Girl Scout enrollment has been declining for years thanks to the efforts of those exposing the radical agenda of the Girls Scouts?

The Girl Scouts are now pushing an agenda that includes sexual experimentation at a young age, contraception, abortion, and homosexuality. This fact has caused enrollment to plummet in recent years as people seek an alternative that more closely aligns with their moral views and religious convictions.

The Girl Scouts have realized that a large portion of their enrolled girls come from homes with moral and religious convictions against things like abortion and homosexuality. These girls and their families believe that life is sacred and should be defended from conception and that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. For this reason, the partnership of the Girl Scouts with groups like Planned Parenthood (and GLAAD) has caused enrollment to drop as families find a moral alternative.

But as the Girl Scouts try to hide their affiliation with abortion groups, the light continues to be shined on the liberal agenda pushed by the once respectable organization. Jill Stanek recently wrote of the ties between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood:

“There is much more corroboration. Tragically, liberal feminists have poisoned the once noble Girl Scouts organization with a pro-abortion agenda. Pro-lifers have been trying for years to get people to notice. Finally, the organization overplayed its hand by calling late-term abortion filibusterer Wendy Davis ‘incredible’ and abortionist protector Katheen Sebelius a woman of ‘courage, confidence, and character.’”

These women, along with others like Nancy Pelosi and Cecile Richards are the “icons” the organization is telling their girls to look up to and seek to emulate. Seriously?! Perhaps the most visible, vocal, and well-known abortion advocates in our country are considered “role-models” for our daughters? The only women missing from this group is Ilyse Hogue of NARAL and Sandra Fluke. That would round out this unholy collaboration of abortion advocates.

Ryan Bomberger, founder of The Radiance Foundation, writes:

“The devolution of Girl Scouts USA, which heavily relies upon the massive $790 million it pulls in with its annual cookie sales, is glaringly evident for those who choose to look. And yes, while it’s true that most cookie sale dollars stay with their local council/troops, one third of all cookie sales are paid to the bakers for the production and shipping of the cookies. Then, Girl Scouts USA gets paid millions in license fees from those bakers depending on the total sum of individual councils’ cookie sales. The more cookies sold, the more money the national Girl Scouts organization makes.”

Listen, you can choose to look the other way if you want. You can rationalize that “it’s just a cookie” and enjoy your Thin Mints. But the reality is that with every box sold, money is being sent to support and fund the abortion industry. If you call yourself pro-life it is hard to rationalize that reality away. Furthermore, if every Christian, every Catholic, every pro-life advocate refused to buy a single box of cookies due to the overt support for abortion by the Girl Scouts, the financial loss would effect change very quickly. We all know it’s true, money talks.

I’ve been part of the Cookie-Cot for years now. But I don’t discriminate; I don’t support any organization that proudly supports abortion. More than keeping me from buying overpriced cookies it helps me stay true to my belief that life is sacred and needs to be defended. For me, it’s putting my money where my mouth is.
