Have You Begun to Catechize Your Children? Should You?

Most Protestant parents have never given catechism a first thought, much less a second-thought. Our Protestant churches, Baptist in particular, don’t consider catechism important and give no effort to teaching parents its importance.
In this short video, however, Tim Keller gives a few reasons why catechism is an important aspect of spiritual formation in children. Rather than relying solely on the church to teach and train kids parents are to be intimately involved in this process.
Catechism, meaning memorization, is not something only Catholics do, although we tend to think of Catholics when we think of catechism. Catechism is the process of spiritual formation designed to impart biblical knowledge and teach children God’s word. And, as Keller points out, “memorization always leads to mediation.” This memorization and meditation is one of the key benefits of catechism. But it’s also critical for spiritual formation in a culture that is saturated with information.

I recently came across an article sharing the “Ten Crucial Lessons Every Father Should Teach,” from John MacArthur’s book Brave Dad. This list is not only biblically based it’s practical. Furthermore, it’s counter-cultural.
Look, the bottom line is that we live in a society that is upside down. The things that are valued in our culture go against the biblical values that we want to teach. And, in order to combat that anti-biblical teaching our kids are bombarded with in culture we must be diligent in teaching them, clearly, what the Bible says. It won’t happen by accident. And while we should expect our church to reinforce what we are teaching our kids at home, we should not expect our church to be the primary biblical teacher of our kids.

I find that my greatest struggle in parenting my kids is consistency. Playing loudly in the basement is okay at noon, but at 7:30 in the morning? Seeking to consistently apply the rules of our household each and every day is no small feat. But, one thing is for sure; demanding that our kid’s obey is essential.

The heart-warming video has gained quite a few views this Christmas season. Once you watch it, you’ll know why.
The Southland Christian Church in Kentucky asked their kids about the Christmas story and then created a video using their answers. The adorable and charming result speaks for itself. But it also proves that kids know a lot more about Christmas than we give them credit. And, that we should diligently teach the biblical Christmas narrative to our kids.

More Resources for Parents Seeking to Raise Godly Kids in a Sinful World

Last week I posted a few resources for Christian parents to help in raising their kids in the “fear and admonition of the Lord.” I found those resources very helpful for me, personally, as I seek to raise my kids in the Gospel. So, when I came across more resources to help with this holy task, I wanted to share them as well.

Resources for Christian Parents Seeking to Raise Kids in a Sinful World

As a parent that is deeply committee to imparting my faith to my children, I am always looking for resources to help. I am often overwhelmed by the task of sharing my faith with my kids, teaching them, and training them. I fail daily and need the wise counsel of those who have gone before me.
With that in mind, the following list is some helpful resources for everything from praying for your kids to taking them to church. There’s insight on answering kids’ biblical questions and tips for raising Godly kids. And, at the end is a list of books and other resources that can provide further support in your task as a parent of bringing the Gospel to your children. I hope this is a helpful list of resources that provide encouragement and support for you, mom and dad.
Why Require Unregenerate Children to Act Like They’re Good?
“Here are at least three reasons why Christian parents should require their small children (regenerate or unregenerate) to behave in ways that conform externally to God’s revealed will. I say “small children” because as a child gets older, there are certain external conformities to God’s revealed will that should be required and others that should not. It seems to me, for example, while parents should require drug-free, respectful decency from a 15-year-old, it would do little good to require an unbelieving and indifferent 15-year-old to read his Bible every day. But it would be wise to require that of a 6-year-old, while doing all we can to help him enjoy it and see the benefit in it.”
Obama Administration Bathroom Policy Blocked by Federal Judge

For some reason the Obama Administration thought it would be a good idea to let school students to use whatever bathroom and locker room they choose. This means that boys that “identify” as girls can use the girls’ facilities and vice versa. Anyone with a little common sense can clearly see what a bad decision and policy this is.
Texas, along with 12 other states agreed that such a decision is not safe for students. So a challenge to the mandate began as greater public outcry against the mandate continued. U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor agreed with the challenge and blocked the mandate saying the Obama Administration did not follow the law in issuing the mandate. Specifically, the judge said the Obama Administration failed to give adequate notice of the impending law and allow for a comment period.
Summer Camp Experiment: Dissecting Aborted baby Brains

In this very short video clip, Dr. Paul Roth of the University of New Mexico Health Science Center admits that students at a summer camp dissected aborted baby brains.
The clip shows Dr. Roth admitting on camera that a faculty member obtained and used fetal brains in one of the summer workshops. Specifically, he states:
“Yes, we had a faculty member who obtained some tissue, and during one of these summer workshops, uh, dissected I think one or two fetal brains.”
A recent article on this deviant incident says that a House Select Panel has sent a letter to the New Mexico Attorney General recommending that the University of New Mexico and the supplier of the baby brains be charged with violating state and federal laws. The article states:
New study Says There’s No Evidence People Are Born in the Wrong Body

The fact that we have to even have a discussion about kids, many of them elementary aged kids, is heart breaking. Those that believe they were born in the wrong body and want to live as the opposite gender are confused, disturbed individuals in need of loving, compassionate help. They do not need encouragement. When it’s an adult in this situation, making such decisions, it’s one thing. When it is a child being encouraged into hormone treatments in order to support their confused decisions, it’s another thing entirely.
Recently, the American College of Pediatricians released a study on “Gender Dysphoria in Children.” The study has some important scientific conclusions regarding kids and transgenderism that need to be read by everyone. This is an important issue because it directly affects children. Adults are, in many ways, complicit in their decision to be transgender. Kids often don’t have the mental and emotional maturity to know what is happening and make the right decision. If the people they trust, parents, schoolteachers, encourage them to make a confused decision; it could impact the rest of their life.
