Americans Seem to Support Kavanaugh More than Abortion

KavanaughHave you seen polls in recent days stating that a “majority of Americans” support abortion? Don’t believe them.

After the recent nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh by President Trump to the Supreme Court, a flurry of polls were released showing that Americans overwhelmingly support abortion. The attempts by abortion activists to send a message that Roe v. Wade is settled and should be left alone is an act of desperation.

A recent article highlights the problems with poll questions being asked and shows that when facts are revealed, support for abortion drops.

What has been revealed is that many people are simply unaware of exactly what Roe v. Wade is. Many people think reversing this legislation would make abortion illegal in all 50 states. In fact, reversing Roe would simply return the issue to the states to decide. I would think that people that claim to be “pro-choice” would welcome the ability of Americans to “choose” whether to legalize abortion or not. More choice is better, right?

Others are not aware that Roe allows for abortion through birth. Americans have overwhelmingly rejected late-term abortion. As the article makes clear, even as late as June of 2018, Americans were not in favor of late-term abortion:

“Many polling questions, including the recent questions by NBC News/Survey Monkey, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and Quinnipiac University all fail to inform respondents that Roe v. Wade effectively legalized abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy and makes it difficult to place limits on late-term abortions. Historically, there has been very little public support for second-trimester or third-trimester abortions. For instance, a Gallup poll thatwas released this June found that only 28 percent of people thought second-trimester abortions should be legal and only 13 percent thought third-trimester abortions should be legal.”

Those pesky facts won’t stop the abortion lobby from screaming that women will lose birth control and have to use coat hangers in back alleys if Roe is overturned. The rhetoric gets turned up to MAX whenever this sacred cow of cultural ideas is slightly threatened. And yet it is just a few that want to see abortion on demand solidified in our culture as some cherished right.

The abortion lobby is on overdrive trying to derail the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Never mind that he has been called an originalist that would uphold the Constitution. Forget that he has a record of defending rights. Because he “might” be the final vote needed to overturn Roe., he simply cannot be allowed on the court.

And yet, polling data suggests that voters want to see Judge Kavanaugh confirmed. A poll released by Susan B. Anthony list (SBA) suggests that swing state voters want to see Kavanaugh confirmed to the court:

  • Voters want their Senators to confirm President Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee:
    • 56% of Florida voters want Nelson to confirm the nominee.
    • 56% of Indiana voters want Donnelly to confirm the nominee.
    • 57% of Missouri voters want McCaskill to confirm the nominee.
    • 68% of North Dakota voters want Heitkamp to confirm the nominee.
    • 59% of West Virginia voters want Manchin to confirm the nominee.
  • Majorities in all five states agree abortion policy should be decided by the people of the state through their elected officials, not the Supreme Court:
    • 54% of Florida voters want abortion policy decided by the people through the legislature.
    • 65% of Indiana voters want abortion policy decided by the people through the legislature.
    • 57% of Missouri voters want abortion policy decided by the people through the legislature.
    • 67% of North Dakota voters want abortion policy decided by the people through the legislature.
    • 57% of West Virginia voters want abortion policy decided by the people through the legislature.

It’s a strange time in our country when people are protesting having rights and their voices returned. The abortion lobby would have this decision unchanged. Pro-life advocates want to see the decision returned to the states where individuals can vote for themselves. Is that so bad?

If you believe strongly in your position. If you believe you have the majority, then let the people vote. The only reason I can see for abortion advocates to protest the opportunity to have this decision given back to the states is because they know they will lose. Maybe not in every state (California and New York come to mind). But overall, they will lose.

Planned Parenthood will lose millions in funding. Abortion clinics will close overnight. Abortion rates will plummet. The status quo will be upended. We can’t have that. Can we?
